2004 Shrimping Reports

1/1/04 | 7:30pm til 1am, First @ RR Bridge, then @ Oak Hill (RB), 60 degrees, winds were light from the N, Started the night at the RR bridge around 7:30 and netted 1 shrimp..packed it up and hit R! iverbreeze at 9:30. We got there at mid-run and bagged about a gallon. Beautiful night though...The catfish were so thick that our bottom lights were useless, the catfish completely covered them up. Eric

1/2/04 6:00 pm to 3:00 am, Riverbreese, cool and breesy, 1 1/2 pints, Got to RB @ 6:00 pm and went 2 miles South. S! et up and waited for the tide change. Once the tide changed, the bugs started running at a slow but steady pace for about 2 hrs. Beautiful nite though not very productive. Started back in at 3:00 am. Boat wouldn't start. Finally got it fixed at 4:00 am. Fish and Game was at the dock but I had no worries. Shellfish Bastard

01/05/2004 9pm till 2am, River Breeze, Clear, Calm and 60 degrees, 2 gal's mostly large, med with12 jumbo's, Pretty much had the place to myself till about midn! ight and folks were still showing up when I left. I be glad I know where to check for Oak Hill tides and I still tried to get there early for the trout. I was on the water just before the tide turned to outgoing and dipped till my back started to cry for home. It was fun! Ugly Bill

Jan5th, Riverbreeze, south wind 60degrees, 10 doz.mixed, We are from Ocean City Maryland and we come for 6mo for the last 3 years. We have a 19ft Key West. This year w! e decided to get into shrimping, so Jerry went and purchased a net, under water light and a extra battery. Monday evening we launched the boat at 11pm and till 4am. We had a ball, with the almost full moon and the dolphins swimming around our boat, it was great. We were happy with our caught being first timers. We love the ramps at Riverbrezze. Looking forward to going again. Gail and Jerry

01/08 730p-1200a, Titusville, 2 1/2 gallons, A night of real quality shrimp. Had the lights on around 730p and instantly netted five big shrimp, but things slowed! for awhile after that. One or two shrimp in the next 45 mins. and then the gates opened. Top end mediums, large, and super jumbos. Real crazy for a little over an hour and then it became a slow pick . Had a feeling it was going to start up again, but just didn't have it to stay any longer Snookman

1/9 from 2:30am to 3:30am, Oak Hill (Riverbreeze) 25-30 mph from the North, 2 (2 shrimp that is), Damn it was cold....and windy...The worst night I've ever spent on the water. We got there at 2:30 a! nd it wasn't bad, but it turned bad just as we were headed out. By the time we dropped anchor, 25mph winds out of the north were pounding us hard. The tide was supposed to shift at 3:11am, but when we left at 3:30, the wind was still driving the water south. Maybe some other time... Eric

01-09-04, Riverbreeze, ZERO, Three shrimp! Glad we packed a lunch. That darn North wind stalled the tide once again... We will try again! Wade

Jan 10, 6:30-8:00, Riverbreeze south, Ice Cold NEWind, Icky, did not see a single shrimp, Went out at around 6pm, lots of boats on the water. Tide did not change??? incomeing! tide all night. Most everyone was off the water by 8pm... very cold night. hopr for better luck next time. project seanympf

1/12/03 Dusk-10:30, RB park, Clear, Calm wind, 50 degrees, 2.5 gallons, Came through like crazy until about an hour after dark. Steady for the rest of the night. Half the shrimp were caught in the first h! our. Sore back this morning! (should have emptied more!) Fish Hawk

01/13/04, Titusville 406 Bridge, Light wind and cold, 0, Got there about 1:30am and see anohter guys also start dropping the linghts. Wait more then 2 hours and not even see a single shri! mp, so is other guy. Where are the shrimps? Anyone caught good number at same location lately? Charles

01/13/2004 6 to 9pm, River Breeze, calm, cool, clear and crowded, one and a half gallons, After I launched the boat, I had to park in the overflow area. I always figure if God ! wants you some place, you will find a parking spot close to the door, if not it is a message that you need the exersize. I sat the hooks and put the light in the water just a couple of hundred yards south of the launch pad cause from my point of view, all space south of there was took. I was wondering how a poor skinny shrip could posibly make to my net with so many nets in the water. Before I could get my net to the ready, two big ones got by. From now on I ain't gonna turn on the light till I get ready. It was steady and sometimes tricky. One jumbo reached for the stars during his escape, jumping nearly six feet out of the water on his way to freedom. I left early cause I be old and cold and was in bed by 10pm. Ugly Bill

1/14/04 7p to midnight, Riverbreeze, 50 deg, light wind, 1 gallon, Mostly small with a few mediums. Dirty Howie

1/14/04 6:30-10:30, RB, Clear 55 degrees, calm wind, 2 quarts, Where did the shrimp go? I was waiting for the gates to open like the past two nights but it never happened. It was a nice night out! anyway. Fish Hawk

1/14/04 7:00 to 10:00pm, Riverbreeze, 52 degrees, light north breeze, 1/2 gallon, Very disappointing! a beautiful night but the shrimp were very small, 2 Jumbo's and there wern't ! very many. Not a bad first trip of the year. Mike

01-16-04, RB, Clear and cool, One Gallon, Nice night. Had one "gentleman" set up on top of us and deploy a frame net that was right in front of our boat. I cussed,we moved and had a great night o! f steady dipping Wade

1/16 from 8pm to 1:30am, Riverbreeze, Variable light winds... 1 gallon, Beautiful night, but no one told the shrimp that they were supposed to run...Lot of jumbos muxed in with the standard Oak Hill size ! shrimp. The shrimp were slow, but steady for the whole evening. Eric

1/17/04 9:00pm to 2:00am, Riverbrezze, South wind 8 to 12 knotts 60 Degrees, 1.5 Gals, Nice night, lot of boats till 12:00a. Good mix jumbos, large, meds. Ginzo

01/19/04, Railroad bridge, Clear and cold, 25 Shrimp, Beautiful night on the water, 25 in the net until One bored wildlife officer came up and reminded me my license had expired 4 weeks earlier. Neve! r the less it wasn't worth $76.00. What ever happened to warnings. Duba Dog

01/24/2004 9:00pm, Railroad Bridge, Cool with slight wind, 3 dozen, Got to the railroad bridge in Titusville around 8:00pm and stayed until 10:30pm. Shrimp ran North for about an hour, dipping only a! bout 3 dozen or so mediems. Lots of boats when I arrived, but most were leaving around the time I did. Bryan

01-24-04, Haulover, SW wind @ 10, 55 deg, Not Even ONE!!, After a gorgeous day, we arrived early and set up on the West end of the canal figuring everyone would come out. Watched a great sunset an! d turned on the lights. Even the current started to run right, but noone told the shrimp what they had to do. After waiting in a cool breeze for a couple of hours, we realized it was becoming fruitless. We packed up and cruised down by the bridge where more boats were just waiting and staring down in the clear water. Seeing this, we put the boat on the trailer and were home by 9:45. On the way home we saw at least 5 other boats headed out. Hopefully they had better luck!! T.C.

1/26 from 8:30 till midnight, Haulover, beautiful, sw wind around 10-15, 6 (shrimp that is), Set up at the West end, turned on the lights and my buddy immediat! ely dipped a jumbo. Put it on a hook, heaved it to the middle of the canal and within 5 minutes hung a bull red. (unable to land but so what) Sucked down some rum and coke, hooked some more reds on little blue crabs (everywhere). All and all an enjoyable eve..........thesnooker

01/26/04, Riverbreeze, winds out of South. Fairly warm, half a gallon, Got to Riverbreeze around 7:00 Nobodywas there. Got set up in shallow water with "Fez",a first timer. Nothing ha! ppened the first hour and Fez came up with a great idea: "LET'S MOVE". So we did for the last bit of the run and got a half gallon in couple of hours. Had we moved earlier we would have got maybe a gallon or more. The rains finally came at the end of the run. Jeff

1/27/04 | 7:30pm til 12am, Riverbreeze, 5-10 West wind and 65 degrees, 2 gallons, Nice night, not many jumbos, not many smalls. All of the shrimp we got the other night were on the medium/large side. I just wi! sh that the commercial fisherman would show some courtesy and not pass three feet in front of your boat.... Eric

1/28/04 | 7:30pm til 12am, Riverbreeze, COLD!!! 34 degrees, light var. wind, 2 gallons, Another pretty night. The same commercial guys that buzzed my boat last night were broken down and had to be towed in...p! oetic...My apologies to the dolphin that my father in law hit with the bottom light (he didn't mean it). One guy on the ramp had 5 gals. an was on his way out (this was visually verified). He said that he was down by Lopez, between 4 & 5. We'll try that tomorrow....Bring your winter clothes..... Eric

1/31/04, Riverbreeze, rainy 55, 4 gallons, Finally took my boy shrimping. Got to Riverbreeze and set up by 10:30. Rainy and cold. Go figure, nobody else was there. Buy 12:45 my 12 year old and I had almo! st 4 gallons. Shrimp were still running but we had to get back home. A great night with the boy. Jeff

11:00pm on 2/1 til 3:30am 2/2, South of Riverbreeze, Light variable winds form the south. 4 gallons, Got there after the Superbowl postgame. We set up in 9ft. of water south of Riverbreeze and It looked like ! the shrimp had started without us. We started dipping and did not stop until 3:30. I had to be at work by 8, so we took off and left them running. This was definately the best night for us this year. If you go, make sure to bring the mosquito repellent, it got warm enough to hatch them yesterday. Eric

2/2-10:30, Riverbreeze, calm, 3.5 gallons, great nite out on the water-shrimp ran steady until 2:00am-then slowed-mostly mediums no jumbos-not bad for the first nite out FujiJoe

2/3 and 2/4, oakhill, clear, wind east 5 knots, 2 gal Tuesday and 1 1/2 gal Wednesday. Arrived tuesday night midnight until 4am, Shrimp were steady, mediums mostly. Wednesday night, 1am to 5am, shrimp was slow, beautiful night out. Normally shrimp the east side of channel at Oakhill. Tonight they were more to the west side of channel. Mostly strong mediums, really had to work hard to get gallon and half. Skinnywater

02/05/04, oak hill, wind se, a good 5 gallons, WE ARRIVED AT RIVERBREEZE AT MIDNIGHT TO BE SET UP EARLY FOR THE 2:00AM TIDE. WITH THE WIND BLOWING OUT OF THE SOUTH THE SHRIPM WERE ALREADY RUN! NING. NOTHING REAL HARD ALL NIGHT, BUT VERY STEADY. AND FINALLY SOME LARGE AND JUMB0S. IT WAS A GREAT NIGHT... COLT

2/5 6pm to 1230, HC, 15mph southwind 71 degree air 66 degree water temps, appox. 1 gallon, It was a clear moon filled night. Shrimp were not plentiful and was slow. Stopped at the Titusville causway and asked how they were doing and saw half a bucket full. Jethro

5-5-03 2am-4am, RB, se wind 10 mph, 1 gal maybe, If I could do it all over again, I wouldn't. Disappointing night overall- started pretty consistant but slowed down throughout the night! . Would have been better if it was a decent hour. fish hawk

2/5, RB, breezy, 2 gal, Got set up around 2:00, ran alright for about and hour then they stopped till about 4:00 then ran good mostly large and a good amount of jumbo's. we packed it ! up at 5:30 shrimp were still running. Jeff

2/7/04, RiverbreezeWNW @ 10-20, Temp Dropping, One Dozen, Dark till 8:30. Wind kicked up about 7:30 and temp started dropping. 12 lousy shrimp. Did better than a couple others! who only got 2 or none. Dirty Howie

2/8/04, New Smyrna, windy, nw at 15-20, 2 dozen, Anchored close to New Symrna bridge to take cover from the wind. Shrimp started running slow at about 11 pm until 3 am. End up with about 2 doze! n medium and jumbos (mostly jumbo). Not bad for my first time shrimping. Ed

2/9/04 7:00 PM to 9 PM, Oakhill, NW wind 5 knots, zip, Checked out Oakhill, cruising up and down channel, east and west sides. Saw maybe 6 shrimp, nobody dipping, about 10 boats. M! ust have been a Shrimp Holiday. Skinnywater

2/10/04 8 -11:30 PM, South Of Riverbreeze, Almost 4, The Insane Shrimp Posse got off to a late start because it took longer than we expected to hacksaw off Clammys h! ouse arrest anklet. We setup south of riverbreeze and started dipping immediatley. Ran slow and steady for the entire tide, Mostly mediums with a few jumbos. Pretty uneventfull with the exception of a boat load of retards that drifted into us when their Big Lots anchor wouldn't hold their giant pontoon boat. According to their inbred logic it was our fault. Nobody got hurt and nobody got arrested. Did get pulled over doing 65 on Maytown road, But he recognized Clammy from somewhere and let us go. Probably from a mugshot. Shrimp Slayer

2/10/04 7 to 10, Oak Hill, Wind form north 15, Nice night, shrimp really never cranked up good. Ended up with 1 1/2 Gals of mostly med's, probably 6 jumb! os. Mel

2/10 from 6 til 10:30pm, Riverbreeze, 15-20mph North Wind and 65 degrees, 1/2 gallon, Got out late and managed 1/2 gallon before they dried up. Real windy though, made it hard to see the shrimp. Wind wa! s blowing so hard, it kept the boat upstream against the current all night long. Eric

2-11-04 sunset until 9:30, Oak Hill, Northwest wind about 10 knots,65 degrees. 2 gallons, After dark they started running slow, Spike started schooling Fart Blossom on the finer po! ints of dipping a shrimp. Blossom declared he didn't miss "many". Well I counted and "many" is exactly 20, mostly jumbos. Spike got nervous because we powered through the beers and started having trouble standing. Worm looking things ran good at the end but we let them go by. Some people in a pontoon boat came out late and got right in front of us. I didn't smell any pot so it wasn't the insane shrimp possie. The run started to slow so we bailed. Blossom took about 2 hours to back the trailer somewhere on the ramp and close enough to the water for us to finally load the boat on the trailer. Spike drove us home. Mudfish

2/12 dark till 12:00, river brezze, calm wind most othe night, 3 gal. short report went to river brezze with bigworm from dark till 12:00 got 3 gals but had to work for them they are thire you ! just got to find them all were small to med meat

1/13/04 7;30 to 11:00, Riverbreeze, 60 deg, light n wind, 1 gallon, Slow pick. Good mix with a dozen jumbos. No trash in water. Shrimp were running a little deep and hard to ! see in the cloudy water. Overall it was a nice night to be out. Dirty Howie

2/16/04; 7:00 to 9:30, Oak Hill, 15-20knot NE winds and very cold, 0, Despite the high winds and cold temperatures, we suited-up with warm c! lothing to brave the elements after making the 45-minute drive up. Water was clean and the stars were out but between the three of us we caught only one lonely shrimp after 1.5 hours on the water. Better luck next time we hope. -Dano. Craig, & Rooster

2-21 Dark till 10: HC, very nice, light wind NW, Went HC early grilled some burgers, set up for shrimpim, current was going very slow the wrong way, did'nt see a shrim! p, no one dipping so at 9:00 we decided to go to the RR bridge. Anchored there about 100' from some loud mouth kid who thought he owned the place. Heard tell his buddy he was ready to through an 8 ounce weight our way. We dipped about 8 shrimp in 45 minuets, I got tired of his mouth so we put the little critters back and left. Greenfisher

2/21/04-Fri night/Sat morn -1:45-4:30am, Riverbreeze, Light wind-4-5 mph, 59 degrees, Approx. 1/2 gallon small (158 shrimp). Stan and I arrived at Riverbreeze about 1:30 am, Sat. morning, 2/21. Turn! ed south of ramp and anchored after about 10 minutes or so. Anchored in about 6' of water. Shrimp were small, no jumbo's. Water current minimal and shrimp were fairly easy to catch, just not enough of them. It seemed we were dipping as many or more than anyone else. May need to purchase a framenet to max. our success. Shrimp "ran" steady most of the time, although, nothing to write home about. Hope to actually get into a run some day. Left at 4:30. Ended up with only 1/2 gallon. -Brad & Stan Brad

02-25-04 / 2130 - 2230, SR406 Bridge Titusville, cloudy, calm wind, 75 deg, <1 gallon, Found myself in Titusville last night on business and stopped by the bridge to see what was happening. People repor! ted that last night they did real well and the crowd on the bridge showed people were spreading the news. After seeing a few of the buggers being caught by others, I decided to pull the net out and proceeded to set up a couple of lights. (I didn't bring the good underwater lights, damnit) Anyhow, after about an hour, I had a full quart of medium and jumbos by just playing around. Had some fun, but I had to leave or risk getting fired! This next moon should be Great! TC

2/29/04/8:30, Oak Hill, calm, 2.5 gals, After getting skunked first time out this season two weeks ago, snkslyr and me ventured out on a worknight only cause a br! eak in the weather made things finally look good. Shrimped casually for 2.5 hours and got 2.5 gals. When they finally turned on hard our backs and wrists were burning for sure - gonna pay hell gettin back into the swing of things again this year. Current was heading south most of the time - picked up the most once the current started to ease. Once it started flowing north - they shut down. But I bet they ran later. Not seeing as many reports this year - C'mon people - post your reports! Scott

3/15/2004 7-midnight, RiverBreeze, water temp, south wind 10-13mph, 2..5, I took Ocean Commotion and my youngest daughter shrimping at Riverbreeze Sunday night. The bad news is 2.5 gals in about 4.5 hours (! deep and spooked shrimp), the good news is there where some biggin's in there. A couple of Jumbos, and about 25 larges. It wasn't too crowded, except for the one fool that decided to drop anchor directly in front of us upstream . Water temp was 67 degrees, wind moderate from the south, visibility poor at the beginning of the tide, and fair towards the end. Well, steak and shrimp fajitas for dinner tonight.  JohnB

3/17/04 / 11.30 to 4AM, Riverbreeze, Calm, chilly (low 50 at 4AM), foggy, 3 = gallons, Linda and I headed out to RB last night about 10PM. The forecasts all called for temps to be in the low 60's so we d! ressed accordingly. We got set up on our usual spot and found the visibility greatly improved over Sunday night. You could see clearly into 4 feet of water. The winds were light, almost calm, from the North. The water temp was about 69. It didn't take long for the first shrimp to jump into the net and picking was in spurts most of the night. A few at a time to as many as 6 or 7 in a spurt, then nothing for 5 - 10 minutes. We ended up with over 3 gallons of mainly medium & large with only a few bait sized and a dozen jumbos. The hardest part was staying warm. The temps dropped down to low 50's and with the warm water clouds of fog were being generated off the surface. At times it was thick enough to 'cloud' your vision when trying to see into the water. We packed it in around 4AM despite feeling we could have limited it we stayed longer. Frankly, we were cold due to the extreme dampness that went right through the clothing we had. EVERYTHING on the boat was covered in condensation droplets to the point of puddles forming on the top of the vinyl 'sea bag.' Jim & Linda

3/18 11:00pm to 5:00am, Lopez, Cool, winds variable, 2.5 to 3 gal, They were running when we got set up around 11 or 11:30. The flow was allready heading out (ahead of schedule). After about an hour the shrimp dropped off ! to a slow trickle with about 1 shrimp at my end of the boat to every 10 shrimp at billy bob's end of the boat. They picked up a little around 4:00pm when we threatened to leave. Ended up with about 3 gallons of mostly medium to large with a few jumbos mixed in and one small squid. Billy bob needs new glasses but all in all a good time was had. U2 Fish

4/16 -17, 8:30 pm to 2:30 am, Haulover then Lopez, Clear, Cool ENE wind 10 to 15 mph, 1.5 gal. Started at Haulover shortly after sunset. The flow was to the east but fairly weak. There was lots of schmeg in the water along wi! th a few nice size shrimp (we got about a half a gallon). By 10 it was obvious that the flow was slowing down so we went up to Lopez and got back on the water at about 11. MMC showed up around midnight. They were still trickling thru at 2:30 when my newbie shrimp buddy started nodding off. Fearing that he might fall asleep an then fall in, we decided to leave with about 1.5 gallons total. Saturday at 11am MMC calls me with his sordid tale of 5 gallons followed by first light flats fishing. He says right after we left they started coming thru in frenzied pulses. He also tells of catching extraordinary "Great White" shrimp that were bigger than Haulover Jumbos. To hear him tell the tale these shrimp would shake the net as if you were landing a sea trout or something. Despite the limited catch on my boat, a good time was had by all. U2FISH

Man am I glad I didn't leave. The run started just after 9:00pm and lasted for a couple hours. Had a great time and heard someone on 96.5 FM say they were shrimping in Oak Hill having a good time too. Finished the night with 164 and one huge granddaddy 8" long and 1" wide. I've never seen such a huge shrimp. He will go good wrapped in bacon and Bar-B-Qued!! Good luck to all your shrimpers out there. Dave

4/18 , 1am to 6am,  Lopez, Cool, wind from ESE, 5 gallons, Having heard MMC's tale of the "Great White" shrimp, I called Billy Bob and said lets go. We got set up at about 1 and proceeded to collect 5 gallons ! of mostly large with a few jumbos. We let most of the dinks float on by. Early on, Billy Bob said I needed my eyes checked because my second shrimp was actually a small crab. We went on to fill the bucket with very nice shrimp but alas, no "Great White" shrimp were seen nor caught. We think the legend of the "Great White" shrimp may be a sleep deprived hallucination of MMC U2FISH

5/29 dark till 1:00 am, Riverbreeze, 85 degrees south wind at 6 to 7, threw them all back, After reading all the storys of the shrimp running thick in Oak Hill, my h! usband and I decided to take the 1 1/2 hr trip up there and bring home our own 5 gallons. Around 9:30 saw lots of small shrimp go by and watched lots of other boaters dipping. I was wondering what in the heck they were dipping and soon realized that it was the mini shrimps going into their buckets. Around 11 we started dipping the small ones that were swarming, quit around 11:30 and waited for some decent size ones to come. Never did! Had we wanted to rape the river of the baby shrimp we would have had 5 gallons in less than two hours. We decided we would wait a few years in hope that the population that is left will grow up a little. At 1 am we dumped our catch back into the river and headed back to the ramps in order to get home before 3. We wasted a trip and was very dissapointed in the people who reported their catches up there. Lilshrimper

5/31, RB, water temp was 80, air temp 72 calm, 2 gallons of small to medium. I have to respond to Lilshrimper on shrimping 101. First off the best time to be there is during outgoing tide. (current going to the left at the ramp) That didn't start the 29th till around 11pm. The previous reports didn't lie and there was mention of "Tried to get only big ones but had to settle with mostly med."  I also have a lifecycle page that tells you the shrimp take 3 months to reach adult size. This year has been one of the best seasons in a long time. Also this type of angling might not be the thing for you to be doing if you didn't absorb nature at it's best and make the best of the situation. Next time go when the reports are more favorable. What you called "wasted a trip" means to me that you are only out to dip shrimp and nothing else. There are many other things you can do besides just shrimping. Keep this in mind. When life deals you a lemon, make lemonade.

Well!!! seems to be alot of BS going on in the Orlando Slantinal or my fellow shrimpers are keeping their clams shut about what's going on out there! Here is what they have reported...
