2005 Fishing Reports
2/13 Got a call and invite to go offshore and decided to go. All the hubbub about sharks at the 27f got me thinking I'd better go deeper so offered to bring my electramates and ended up going ese and bump around the cones. It was a nice day with lil wind, 57º water going out and 75º on the cones. First hookup was mine an aj. Next up was Bruce (Devildog) hooks up good and once the fish gets 6' from the surface it explodes with a big bubble burst. Never seen that before but it made it in the cooler. Then the bites stopped but tried for another hour and headed into shallower water where a few keeper seabass, and lane was caught.saw rips and weeds at 175' but nothing biting. Not a bad day tho.

2/16 went out on JohnB's boat to try some spots. Darrel SDY and Terry Terry lee were the skilled fisherman this day. I did manage to bring one of these guys in tho.

2/23 Was invited out again on Ddogs boat. We had a late start since a tire blew and put us an hour and a half behind schedule but was heading out by 730. Stopped where there had been large snappers caught Saw JohnB and Newie along with other people out there and anchored up 6' from JohnB. Sorry John. Moved over some and tried again and the current changed and swung us around in front of another boat but managed to keep out of their anchor and lines. Then the brand new tld25 with 40 mono and penn rod goes to work and bring this 24# red over the side.

Then I get another bow up and it breaks. Then another. I am thiking the 60# flora might not be able to take so much punishment and think I need to cut off the leader the length of them fish since the tails maybe be fraying that Seagar leader? Tried a couple of spots out deeper but nothing but shorts. Stopped in a mark in 135 to manage a 6# mango. Saw cobias chasing short fish we brought up but by the time we got out jigs in the water they were out of site. Happened several times. Had great company and made for a great day. Ocean Commotion in the background.
3/25 I was invited on a tuna trip on the Miss-n-heather with Capt. Barry. At the time I really had given up on the idea of tuna fishing but put my confidence in this boat due to all of the experience that was on the boat. Headed out at 530am for the trip out 75 miles. Forecast was perfect but as we got out there the weather went south and sloppy. He found a few birds and we tried them but no luck. We tried for an hour or so and then the captain states the waters are not fishable so we headed back in empty handed. This is my first charter with no fish. Needless to say my confidence level dropped even more and do not plan to try tuna fishing again. Too much $$ was spent and nothing for the freezer. Nice boat though!
4/5 Went out
at sunrise and headed east to Domacles but thee was nothing there but grunts.
Then to a barge in 120' but no one home. Then found a spot on 27f and it had a
few fish for us. Managed a few triggers, vermillion, a mango, and a chocolate
chip. Best fish of the day was Surveyor's 11# warsaw grouper

4/21 after lastnights 2 dozen shrimp I took them for a ride out of the port to meet some friends. Got out to bouy #4 headed south. I notice oil dripping out the motor and pulled the cowling to find the oil resivior cap assembly was leaking. (natural 3 year timer) and decided to take it back in before I run out of oil! Saw a peice of boat floating and threw out a doa and out comes a 4 # tripletail.

Continued in but found no more debri floating so one fish dinner for 2 tonight. Got a parking ticket out in the back 40 of the parking lot. I need a parking map for that place!!
9/27 It has
been too long and had to get my fishing fix since before Katrina. What a nice
day with a 2' bumpy start with 4' widely spaced swells. Took Surveyor and
Carribbean Soul for a trip out to 110' artificial. The water looked nice and
clean dark blue and was able to manage a few snapper and triggerfish. Yours
truely used his new Torium 30 and managed one @ 14lbs. Lots or tackle was lost
to sharks and after 1200 all that would bite was sharks. smooth ride back to the
ramp and NO TRAFFIC!!! Them gas prices of $2.96 gallon gas is sure keeping alot
of fishermen onshore. Met up with JohnB and his crew around 11. Nice day for
fishing and a great crew
.
