Reef Locations

Artificial Reef Locations
SNOTE: The Artificial Reefs database is sorted by DEPLOYMENT DATE, if available. The DEPTH field is the depth of water in feet to the bottom in reef area, while RELIEF is the height that the materials rise above the bottom in feet, if available. The GPS (Global Positioning System), DGPS (Differential GPS), LOR (Loran C) or UK (unknown) entries in the GPS field indicates which format the original coordinates were obtained (if known). The other set of coordinates was mathematically calculated and is probably not as accurate as the original set. If UNKNOWN (UK) is listed then the LORAN is probably the more accurate set of coordinates. In the MATERIALS field, a (W) indicates a shipwreck, (BAY) indicates an inshore reef within a bay, (TM) means Trade Mark and a # symbol, followed by a number, indicates the number of pieces of that material.

SESSION PROHIBITED:

It is unlawful to harvest, possess, land, purchase, sell, or exchange any of the following:
uncured soft or hard Corals, Seafans, Jewfish, Sawfish, Sawshark, Basking Star, Spotted Eagle Ray, Queen Conch, "live" Rock, Longspine Urchin, Bahama Starfish, Nassau Grouper, Marine Turtles, Manta Rays, Marine Mammals, Whale Shark or Sturgeon.

If fishing in Federal waters in the Atlantic, consult the South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council regulations. They just published a really neat color booklet that covers the rules very well. Is complete with full color illustrations to help in identifying fish. Sunrise Marina at Port Canaveral has copies available.A general rule of thumb to help you in this matter is as follows:
If the State law prohibits POSSESSION of a fish beyond a certain limit but Federal law allows TAKE of the same fish at a higher limit, State Law takes precedence over Federal law. Cobia are a perfect example. State law allows take and POSSESSION to 1 fish per angler (33" fork minimum). Federal law allows take and possession of two fish per angler. Since state law limits POSSESSION to 1 fish per angler, it over-rides federal law. Better not land in Florida with more than one Cobia per angler...
If the State Law prohibits TAKE of a fish but Federal Law allows take of the same fish, Federal Law applies AS LONG AS you DO NOT FISH or LINGER in state waters (this includes throwing a cast net). About a year or so ago, Red Porgies were a perfect example. State law prohibited TAKE in state waters. Federal law allowed 1 per person. IF YOU DID NOT FISH OR LINGER in state waters (going out or coming in), you could legally land 1 red porgie per angler. NOW, state law matches federal law on Red Porgies.
Kim Iverson Kim.iverson@noaa.gov  is the Public Information Officer for the SAFMC. Send her an email and ask her to put you on her mailing list. You'll receive regular updates concerning federal fisheries regulations. She'll also send you a copy of the regulations booklet they just published.
